Meditations
PROCESS FOR CREATIVE MEDITATION (VISUALISATION)
Find a quiet place to sit where you will not be disturbed. Turn off the phone or put the answer phone on. If you like to burn essential oils, a good choice is frankincense or sandalwood as it has been used in meditation for thousands of years. It quietens the thoughts and helps to get us out of the head mind that is so persistent (For other ideas, see Kathleen’s book about using essential oils for meditation) Fresh flowers or plants are also good to have. I like to have a single rose in front of me when I meditate. It is a symbol for the heart chakra. Taking our attention into the heart centre (chakra) helps us to get out of the head mind that is so persistent with its intrusive thoughts at times.
Sit comfortably, either in a chair or a yoga meditation position if you prefer. Close your eyes and begin to breathe gently and smoothly. When you feel centred and relaxed, focus your breath into the centre of your chest. Feel your chest rising and falling with your breath. Then, after a few breaths, begin to imagine a bright light, like a sun or a star, in your heart centre (chakra) at the centre of your chest. With each breath, it begins to grow and expand until it fills your chest and then surrounds you with light. This process of filling and surrounding yourself with light protects you as you prepare to meditate. Light symbolises Father/Mother God, the Source-Of-All-That-Is and the Angels of Light.
Continue with your chosen meditation.
When you are ready to close your meditation focus again on your breathing. Be aware once again of your physical body and breathe more deeply. Listen to the sounds you can hear, rub the palms of your hands together to bring your attention back to your everyday feelings. Cup them over your eyes and feel the warmth coming into you from your hands. Blink behind your hands and then open your eyes and have a good stretch. Make sure you are grounded again by visualising roots from the soles of your feet going into the earth. Have a glass of cool water and walk around the room, feeling the ground beneath your feet.
It’s a good idea to keep a meditation journal so you can track your spiritual journey.
