SEPTEMBER MEDITATION, 2005

Our September meditation is inspired by thoughts of finding what you should be doing with your life that is enjoyable and satisfying. A lot of the people who come here for healing, therapies and yoga feel unfulfilled with what they are doing. They feel as if they are worn down by uncomfortable and stressful journeys to work and long hours in uncongenial work. When you meditate, it’s wise not to dismiss your visions and ideas as “only imagination.” Imagination is creative visualisation. We can create what we want to do. Before I left my work in education, I kept a creative journal for several years, imagining, if you like, what I wanted to do. I created all the business cards and logos in there and I still use them today. Some of them started as mere doodles but they developed into the brochures, leaflets and ideas that I am using in our work of KEYS. One of the things I did was to draw a picture of a cheque and write in the amount I wanted. I thought it was very over the top, but when I was granted early retirement, my retirement lump sum was almost exactly that amount, although I had no idea it would be.

I think it’s very important to find work that you really love. You can use affirmations that help to bring about changes in your attitude and outlook. One that I like is:

"I do what I love and I love what I do.”

I have used this meditation often on my workshops and meditation groups. If you want to do meditation with a group, which is a helpful way to do it, find a local group that you can join. If you live in West London , you can email me and ask about the group I have here.

THE BOOK OF LIFE.

Sit for meditation in the usual way.

You find yourself in a magnificent city with fine architecture. It is warm and sunny and you feel very happy. You see in front of you a beautiful building, built of marble. It is a library but no ordinary library. This library keeps the books of everybody’s life. The book of your life is in here and it keeps a record of all you have done and what you still have to do. Before we are born, we decide what we want to come and do with the life we will have. It is all in the book of your life. We each have one and we spend a lot of our time trying to remember what we are to do.

You enter the library and you find the librarian, who is sitting in a large reception area. The librarian is a wise old man or woman. You go up to him/her and ask if you can see the book of your life. The librarian takes you along a corridor with many beautiful doors on each side. You seem to know which door is yours before the librarian stops in front of it. You go in and find yourself in a room with many bookshelves lining the walls. There is a large, beautifully carved wooden table in the middle of the room. There are comfortable chairs that you can sit on or sit at the table. On the table is a large book, handcrafted with fine binding and decorations on the front and the spine. The book is covered with leather and the writing is gold and silver. There are gemstones and jewels making patterns on the front. It is altogether a most magnificent book. This is a special book, because it is about you and you are special.

The librarian leaves you with the book and you sit at the table to open it. Automatically it opens at the page that is where you are in your life right now. That is the only part you are allowed to see. Look on the page and decipher what is the next action you need to take in your life. If you are bored, frustrated, tired with what you do, see writing appear that tells you the next action you need to take to move on and make progress. Or you might see pictures about it. Then close the book, but know that you can return whenever you need to. You leave the room and return to the entrance and leave the library, thanking the librarian.

Conclude your meditation in the usual way. The first thing you need to do is to write down what you remember of the meditation and what you need to do. You need to do something positive as soon as you can. If you didn’t see anything or get any ideas, don’t worry about it. You may have a dream or waking thought or meet someone who has an idea you like.
