SEPTEMBER MEDITATION, 2006
Come September, for many of us, the holidays seem only memories. This meditation is inspired by views of a lake where we walked in August when we were in Cornwall, always our favourite place in the late summer and we have done this walk several times. The still peaceful waters of the lake reflect the blue sky and the swans that glide majestically by. The lake is at Loe bar in Cornwall. (See the accompanying picture below)

THE LAKE OF PEACE
Centre yourself with your slow, gentle breathing. Feel as if you are breathing in light. Continue with this breathing, as though you are filling your whole being, every atom and cell and even the genes in your DNA, with pure, sparkling, radiant light. You begin to feel that you are radiating millions of tiny suns from every part of you.
Then begin to visualise a beautiful lake. Its waters are still and calm, not even a breeze ripples its surface. The lake is surrounded by stately trees and these also are reflected in the water. There are beautiful golden dragonflies and blue damselflies, a smaller variety, flying around the lake. Not far away, you can see swans, both white and black, swimming and diving. You enjoy sitting in the warm sunshine.
As you sit on the shore of the lake, you feel peaceful and relaxed, all daily concerns are far away and you begin to feel refreshed and revitalised. If you want to, you can get into the lake and float on its calm waters, feeling the slight ebb and flow of the water as you breathe in and out. In this peaceful, tranquil state, you are able to commune more easily with spirit, with your guides and angels, for as the calm waters of a lake reflect the blue sky, so your peaceful, calm self can reflect the spirit. When your mind and breath are calm and still, your higher self, your spirit, can more easily commune with you and you gain fresh insights and inspiration for your life.
When you feel it is time to finish, once again, become aware of your body, the room where you are sitting, your breathing. Rub your palms together, cup them over your closed eyes, feel the warmth. Gently massage your forehead, cheeks, jaw and chin, then open your eyes and stretch. Have a drink of water. You are ready again for every day things.
Meaning of the symbolism
WATER represents your emotions. When the surface of the lake is agitated by storm and wind, it cannot reflect the beautiful scenery. Likewise, when your mind is agitated, you can’t reflect truly about actions and events in your life or gain insights. When the water is calm, it reflects its surroundings like a mirror, so when your mind is calm, you gain insights into decisions and actions.
SWAN represents grace and black and white swans are perfect balance
DRAGONFLY symbolises light, the removing of illusions
BLUE SKY is a traditional yoga symbol for calming the mind
SUN is the light also, but the light of the Divine
