April Meditation 2007
When the moon is full in the sun sign of Taurus, (May 2nd, 2007) Buddhists celebrate the Festival of Wesak, the birthday of Buddha. Kwan Yin is the feminine Buddhist Bodhisattva, representing the qualities of mercy and compassion, of healing. She is known as “The Compassionate One” and is interested in the everyday life of men and women. Her shrines are found by rivers or the seashore in China, Japan, Vietnam and Korea. You will find more about her in my book, Essential Oils and Meditation, Polair Publishing 2007, available from us (contact us on www.keystolight.co.uk)
MEDITATION ON THE QUALITIES OF KUAN YIN, CHINESE GODDESS OF MERCY AND COMPASSION
This is a traditional meditation, helping to develop our qualities of mercy and compassion. It helps to bring a sense of peace into our own world. Using May Chang essential oil enhances the meditation.
1. Vapourise a drop or two of may chang essential oil or inhale from a tissue.
2. Attune to your breathing and become still and centred.
3. Imagine it is night and you are sitting overlooking the sea. The night is warm and still and the moon is full.
4. The moon is reflected in the still water and its light forms a path across the sea. As you gaze at the moon, you feel calm, serene and joyful.
5. The moon grows brighter and brighter. In it you see the form of the beautiful goddess, Kuan Yin, surrounded by an aura of pure pearly light. You see her clearly as she smiles at you and radiates the qualities of serenity and compassion. As these qualities wash over you and fill you, you realise that compassion towards others heals you also and that bearing grudges and being judgemental only harms you and no-one else.
6. Repeat her name softly to yourself and observe the feelings of peace and joy that fill you as you do this.
7. Now Kuan Yin begins to leave. The moon is about to set and, as it disappears across the horizon, Kuan Yin also goes. She grows smaller and smaller, until all you see is a small sphere like a pearl.
8. Pearls are also from the sea. Oysters grow beautiful gems around the grit that irritates them. They grow into pearls, the symbol of wisdom. In the same way, the experiences that cause us to be irritable and critical can help us to develop compassion and wisdom, like pearls. Serenity and compassion can grow from our tears and become like pearls of wisdom and beauty.
9. Conclude your meditation but repeat it often to benefit from its qualities of peace, tranquillity and compassion.
