Our Latest Bi-Annual Newsletter - Spring 2005

Our Spring newsletter is later than usual because we went to Egypt for nearly 2 weeks to celebrate Kathleen’s birthday. It was wonderful to be in warmth and sunshine instead of the January cold of England . One of the most amazing sights was getting up on the first day of our holiday, opening the curtains and seeing the pyramids at dawn.

pyramids at dawn

We spent 2 days in Cairo , visiting the Cairo Museum , the oldest Coptic church, the Mohamed Ali mosque, and other sites. The next day, we visited the Giza pyramids, Memphis and Saqqara . Then we flew on to Luxor to join the cruise ship “Nile Beauty” for a 7 day cruise along the River Nile, taking in some of the ancient temples on the way to Aswan .

Aswan

Then we returned to Luxor for 2 relaxing days before flying back to Heathrow. Kathleen spent her birthday sunning herself in the hotel grounds by the River Nile.

Although we have seen many TV programmes about Egypt , nothing can beat the splendour of actually seeing those ancient temples and their magnificent designs. Even with all our modern technology, we cannot approach the technical skill of the ancient Egyptians, some building about 7,000 years ago. We also enjoyed the leisurely cruise along the River Nile, watching the scenery changing from fairly modern towns to ancient looking villages, where everything seemed as timeless and unchanging as the stories one reads about ancient times.

In all the Egyptian temples, we were impressed by 7 sanctuaries leading into the innermost shrine room. As you approached the shrine, each sanctuary was a step higher than the one before, so that the shrine with the statue of the god or goddess would be at the highest level. The sanctuaries would each have had a door, now vanished, made of some precious wood, like cedarwood, and covered with gold. Only priests and pharaohs would have been allowed into the sanctuaries and the shrine.

The similarity with yoga philosophy was very apparent to us, with its understanding of the seven chakras. In yoga meditation, we ascend through the chakras (energy centres) until we reach the crown centre, sahasra chakra, which is the most spiritual centre, connecting with our highest inspiration from The Source of All That Is Light. But now we don’t need such elaborate temples, for we understand our own body is a temple of light in the making. I read also that the Karnak temple at Luxor represents the different parts of the human body. For many years I have had meditations about climbing up 7 steps. I wonder if it was a past life memory. Who knows!

For those who are interested in such things, there is a fascinating book by Grace Cooke, the founder of the White Eagle Lodge, about her past memories of Egypt . “The Illumined Ones” costs £7.50 + £1 p&p, available from us.

Our meditation this time is one about the journey through the seven chakras. (For more information about chakras, “The Chakra Handbook” is available from us, £12.99 + £1 p&p.

MEDITATION ON CHAKRA COLOUR BREATHING - THE RAINBOW JOURNEY

You are a rainbow of light and colour!

Play some soft, meditative music if you like it. “Chakras”, ”Chakra Journey”, musical energy for chakra balancing and “Spectrum Suite” by Steven Halpern are all suitable pieces and available from us. Make sure that you have no interruptions by turning off your phones, etc. If you like to burn incense or essential oils, it helps to create a relaxed and meditative frame of mind.

First sit quietly and focus on the gentle breath at the tip of your nose. Notice each breath as it comes and goes. Then imagine (visualise) a beautiful sparkling crystal of light, shining like the sun, above your head. All the colours of the spectrum are found in a crystal when the sun catches it. See and feel this light pouring down around you and within you. You begin to feel filled with light and colour. Continue to breathe in light and start to focus on the base of the spine, the root chakra, which resonates to the element of earth. It’s for grounding and energy needed in everyday living. Visualise the colour red, but as red is a powerful and stimulating colour, keep it a soft shade, like a deep pink or deep red rose. If you need energy, you can make the colour brighter. Feel your hips and legs and lower abdominal area filled with beautiful, soft red. Continue for a few more breaths. Turn your attention to your naval chakra, slightly below the naval and at the sacrum area of the spine. It resonates with the element of water. Visualise a beautiful vibrant orange colour. Perhaps you see an orange or a bunch of marigolds.

sunset

This colour is for creativity, fertility and the reproductive system. Continue to focus on your breath and a band of orange light around the sacrum and naval area. Then become aware of the solar plexus chakra, above the naval and between the ribs at the front and all around the waist area. This is the fire element. Imagine vibrant yellow light, like bright sunshine, all around your middle and continue to breathe it in. Then focus on the chest. The heart chakra is at the centre of the chest and is the element of air. Visualise sunlit green filling your whole chest, front and back. Breathe in this green light into any heartaches that bother you and see them dissolving away. Bring your attention up to the throat chakra and the element of ether, space. Breathe in soft blue light, like the summer sky or sapphires. Feel it surround your throat like a scarf of light, aiding you in speaking your truth in perfect ways. When you are ready, focus next on the third eye centre, between the eyebrows, the centre of intuition and imagination, the gateway to clairvoyance. It is the place of seeing the truth. Breathe in the colour indigo, the colour of the night sky just at sunset and sunrise. See a band of indigo all around your head at brow level. Continue to breathe in indigo until you are ready to move on up to the crown chakra. See the top of your head lit by beautiful amethyst colour of all shades from deepest violet to palest lilac. This is the centre for inspiration and higher creativity, connection between spirit and matter, your higher self and everyday self. Continue to focus on the crown chakra until you feel your meditation is finished. Then return through the colours and chakras, coming down the body until you visualise red again, which grounds you and brings you back into everyday awareness. When you have finished, bring your attention back to your breath. Become aware of your body and the room around you. Breathe more deeply and when you are ready, open your eyes. Take your time. When you are ready, drink some water and return to your every day activities.

NEW YOGA TEACHERS’ COURSE

The yoga teachers’ courses continue to be popular. We are running three at the moment and will start a new one in the Autumn when a current one is finished. Check our website for details and dates. If you are interested, leave your name and postal address by email for the brochure and information or ring Kathleen for a chat. Also see www.friendsofyoga.org

WEEKLY YOGA CLASSES

TUESDAYS. This 1 ½ hour class meets at 7.30 p.m.

WEDNESDAYS. We have 2 classes, each of 1 ½ hours, at 6:30 and 8:00 p.m.

THURSDAYS. We have a 2 hour yoga and meditation class from 10:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

In all cases, numbers are limited to not more than 9 students, so that they can have individual attention and support. We do not do drop in classes for several reasons. Each course usually follows a theme for the term and when the class is full, we do not have room for extra people. The style of yoga taught is classical yoga, which includes proper breathing, yoga postures, relaxation and meditation and we specialise in a gentle approach, encouraging people to work up to their full potential gradually. At the moment all the classes are full but please ring if you are interested when a vacancy occurs.

PRIVATE CLIENTS.

Kathleen continues to see clients for zero balancing, massage and aromatherapy treatments and for personal yoga training and relaxation. Please ring for an appointment.

ANGEL WORKSHOPS continue to be successful and are very popular with participants at Hillingdon Adult and Continuing Education Centre (ACEC). This year, courses were fully booked and the centre had to run an overflow course. For further information, check out the website or send for a brochure.

CRYSTALS.

An Advanced crystal workshop will be held on Saturday, April 9 th. We will be working with high vibration gemstones like moldavite, danburite, iolite and tanzanite for healing and transformation. Check the website or send for a brochure.

If you are interested in grade 1 crystals for healing, feng shui or collecting, ring for an appointment to view. We also stock books, tapes, CDs, yoga mats, angel cards and books, incense, and Native American smudge.

Best wishes to you all from both of us.
